Southern Pacific Rebuilt 40' Box Cars with 10' Doors

SE-27 : $12.00 SP Rebuilt 40' Box cars with 10' Doors 1963+ (Letters 2 cars)

Set SE-27 showing all of the lettering included in the set. (Above)

SP took delivery of thousands of 40' Box cars after WWII. With a shortage of lumber cars in the 1960s, the SP Sacramento Shops rebuilt a significant portion of its 10' Inside Height 40' box car fleet with 7' Doors. After rebuilding, the cars looked very different, with a rebuilt sill and huge 10' wide doors. Large diagonal yellow stripes were painted on the doors to signify their lumber loading status. Between 1963 and 1970, over the SP rebuilt over 7,000 cars to the 10' Door "Yellow Striper" configuration. The box cars lasted into the early 1980s.

These cars were often loaded with Pacific Northwest lumber, destined for just about any location in the US. It is also worth noting that the cars were used for other loadings as well "on their way back" to the SP. Some real examples of loads traveling through the GM&O/ICG world I have noticed include the expected PNW Lumber load as well as non-PNW paper loading, lube oil barrels, and shingles.

The box cars were rebuilt from 1963 to 1970. Rebuilt cars came from the B-50-28, B-50-29, B-50-31, B-50-33 classes. Some 6' Door classes B-50-26 and B-50-27 cars also made it into the rebuild pool. The cars kept their original classes after rebuilding to 10' Doors. This set SE-27 covers the as-rebuilt lettering with assorted SP classes, CAPY and SP reweigh stations. Much of the lettering is cross-compatible, so modelers will likely find uses for this lettering outside of the 10' "Yellow Striper" box cars, no matter what their era.. (CAPY data, classes etc.)

This new decal set is designed for the new Tangent Scale Models SP Rebuilt 40' Box Cars with 10' Doors, in both a 1963-1966+ running board version as well as a 1968-1970+ non-running board version with rebuilt ends. A detailed lettering diagram is included with each set

Available in HO Scale only. All artwork drawn by me. Printed by Cartograf of Italy, the finest producers of water slide decals in the world.
