Gulf Mobile & Ohio Green 50' PS-1 Boxcar Decal Sets:

ICG-67 : GM&O 50' PS-1 Green Boxcar DF Non-Cushioned 1969+
ICG-68 : GM&O 50' PS-1 Green Boxcar 40" Hydroframe Cushioning 1966+
ICG-69 : GM&O 50' PS-1 Green Boxcar 60" Hydroframe Cushioning 1962+

The Gulf Mobile & Ohio rostered an extensive fleet of Pullman Standard 50' PS-1 Boxcars. Built from 1957 to 1971, they numbered over 3400 cars across 19 orders. This three new decal sets focus on the 15 orders / 2600 cars that were delivered in the GM&O's green paint schemes. Pullman Standard delivered the Green Fleet to the GM&O between 1962 to 1971, and they roamed nation-wide through the 1990s. Some were sold to the ICG regional spinoffs like Chicago Central and the Paducah and Louisville, but most stayed with the ICG (and later the "New" IC) until their scrapping.

The cars were painted with green sides, ends and roof. The draft gear extensions were green. The running board (if present) was unpainted galvanized steel. The trucks and underframe were painted black. Of course, the green eventually peeled up on top, revealing the galvanized steel roof.

There are three different decal sets available: ICG-67, ICG-68 and ICG-69. How do you decide which one to use? Simple: They are divided up by the Cushioning devices (or lack of) used on the cars (since this corresponds to the various DF/Cushioning logos on the side of the car.) Each set includes all of the return routes for those specific cars. Yes, that's right: You now get all of the various return routes (for those specific car series) with the individual car set.

To make things as easy as possible, in the roster below, I have made a note of the appropriate decal set to be used for each series.

Photos of these cars are all over the place, including the Morning Sun IC/GM&O Color Guide by Kincaid. (Comon, now, you haven't gotten that book yet?)
Internet sources include:
George Elwood's Fallen Flags Site (Scroll down to Freight Equipment and look for boxcars in the 55000-59699 series)

If I find some other online sources, I will list them.

The GM&O Historical Society did a three part series on the GM&O PS-1 boxcars in News Issues #96 (2000), #101 (2002) and the #108/109 Double Issue (2005). Back Issues can be ordered here from the Society and they provide the fantastic prototype story behind this fleet of cars.

Below, I have a brief roster of all of the Green Fleet 50' PS-1 Boxcars to assist in modeling. I have also listed which of the three sets to use for each series...

I use Kadee's HO Model, (they are producing various door, brakewheel and underframe configurations...), and I use Tamiya Green X-5 paint to go after a fresh, newer car. These cars shifted darker / more olive in color in the later years, so it is always a good idea to look at photos...

Don't forget that Moloco now makes the 10' New Style Pullman Door... a very nice part. (See www.molocotrains.com for more info)

Each decal set is silk screened in white and includes enough lettering for a single car. A detailed lettering diagram is included. A big thank you to Ken Donnelly, Nick Molo, John Kohlberg and Tom Mann for their research assistance. Without the help they provide, decal sets like this can't happen.

Cost: $10.00 per set. Available in HO Scale only.
