Illinois Central Gulf 2893cf Pullman Standard Covered Hopper 1973+

With the 1972 merger, the ICG inherited 250 3-bay 2893cf covered hoppers. Coming from both the GM&O and the IC, the IC cars were built by Pullman Standard and the GM&O cars (with slightly different hatch spacing) were built by Greenville.

In HO Scale, two models exist that can be used to correctly model some of these ICG cars:

The Athearn 2893 cu. ft. PS-2 3-Bay Covered Hopper can be used to model the ICG 707050-707149 series, built by Pullman Standard in 1955 for the IC. With roof hatch changes, it can be used as a basis for the ICG 705000-705099 ex-GM&O Greenville cars, built in 1957.

The Walthers 2893 cu. ft. PS-2 3-Bay Covered Hopper can be used to model the ICG 707000-707049 series, built by Pullman Standard in 1959 for the IC.

These revenue service covered hoppers carried commodities like cement, lime and phosphate. They were painted light gray, with black trucks. Many of these hoppers disappeared in the late 1980s and early 1990s, seeing 30-40 years of service.

A detailed lettering diagram is included. This set includes enough lettering for 1 car and is printed in black, white and yellow. You provide the ACI label; the decal set provides all other lettering, including 'stretched' emblems to compensate for placement over the rib of the car..
