Illinois Central Gulf 2-Bay Covered Hopper 1973+

With the 1972 merger, the ICG inherited over 1,300 2-bay covered hoppers in the 1958-2006 cu.ft. capacity range. Coming from both the GM&O and the IC, the cars were built by ACF, Pullman Standard, and General American.

In HO Scale, several models exist that can be used to correctly model some of these ICG cars:

Kadee's PS-2 2-Bay Covered Hopper (using their later post-1957 version) can be used to model the ICG 701650-701849 series, built by Pullman Standard in 1957 for the IC.

Bowser's ACF 2-Bay Covered Hopper (open side version) can be used to model the ICG 700700-700711 and ICG 700800-700899 series, built by PS (1953) and ACF (1951), respectively for the IC.

These revenue service covered hoppers carried dense commodities like cement, lime, sand and salt. They were painted light gray, with black trucks. Many of these hoppers disappeared in the late 1980s and early 1990s, seeing 30-40 years of service. Some examples lasted into the late 1990s in captive service in Kentucky.

A detailed lettering diagram is included. This set includes enough lettering for 1 car and is printed in black, white and yellow. You provide the ACI label; the decal set provides all other lettering, including 'stretched' emblems to compensate for placement over the rib of the car..
